Investigators with the North Carolina Highway Patrol believe that a trucker allegedly fell asleep at the wheel as his rig struck six motorcycles on the shoulder of Interstate 85 in Greensboro. The motorcyclists pulled over after one of the bikes developed a mechanical problem. They were on a trip from Washington D.C. to Atlanta, Georgia.

Injuries and Loss of Life

A 37-year-old man from Woodbridge, Virginia, died at the scene. On Sunday, July 19, a 51-year-old male motorcyclist from South Chesterfield, Virginia died at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center of injuries sustained in the accident. Four other motorcyclists sustained injuries in the crash.

Trucker Charged

The semi driver is a 31-year-old man from Hollywood, Florida. The Greensboro News and Record reports that the semi driver is now charged with felony hit-and-run and two counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. Troopers believe that the trucker stopped about one-half mile up the road only because he had a flat tire, possibly due to the collision.

Although the investigation into this fatal interstate accident is ongoing, many issues potentially arise when a commercial vehicle is in a wreck. When it is reasonable to assert that negligent conduct led to injury or death, it is possible to file civil litigation seeking compensation.
