Why You Need to Increase Your Underinsured Motorist Coverage

Underinsured Motorist | Mike Lewis Attorneys

An Unfair Situation

Recently, I had a young woman call me that was in a terrible wreck.  She was hospitalized for a week and had to undergo several surgeries.  The defendant’s insurance company called and offered to pay her $30,000. That amount felt like a drop in the bucket up against a week’s worth of hospital bills, not to mention the future medical care she would need.  After talking the situation through with her, I had to give her the news I hate to give. That’s it.  $30,000. That’s all there is. That’s all there ever will be. The defendant lived in an apartment and had no appreciable assets. There was no other coverage that could be used to protect her, let alone fairly compensate her for the damages the defendant had caused. That was all the money available unless the defendant somehow came into big money sometime soon.

The Financial Impact

This is a conversation I have to have way too often.  I tell you this to remind you that there is something you can do to protect yourself from ever having to have this conversation.  Crashes happen.  Often times, they are unavoidable no matter how cautious of a driver you are.  But while crashes are inevitable, financial devastation as a result of a crash is not. Call your insurance agent today.  Increase your auto insurance liability and underinsured motorist limits.  That way, if you hit someone and cause serious injury, you are protected from them trying to collect against you personally.  Or, if tragedy should strike, you are protected in the event that someone with the minimum coverage sends you to the hospital for a week.  Nobody likes to think about it.  Nobody wants to imagine being in a wreck. Everyone thinks they are a safe driver and it won’t happen to them.  You can’t control everything around you, but you can be ready when the unthinkable happens.  Don’t spend one more day out on the road unprotected.

In the event you are in a crash, make sure to call our experienced personal injury attorneys to make sure that a thorough insurance coverage investigation is done to ensure that you do not miss out on any coverage that might be available.  We are here to help you and make sure your rights to any and all policies are protected.
