Benicar

benicar

Benicar® is the brand name for a class of drugs that are known as angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARB) that were approved in 2002. The drug is used to reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack in patients who are suffering from elevated blood pressure.

Unfortunately, the last several years have revealed that the drug poses significant risks to patients. More importantly, the negative side effects associated with the drug can appear at any time. The Benicar drugmaker is Japanese pharmaceutical company Daiichi Sankyo, Inc.

The Dangers Of Benicar

There are a variety of risks associated with the drug. Some of the minor risks include dizziness and serious side effects include gastrointestinal and cardiovascular risks.

Some of the minor side effects associated with Benicar include:

  • Intermittent or chronic abdominal pain
  • Radiating or localized back pain
  • Respiratory infections
  • Wheezing and shortness of breath
  • Fetal defects in pregnant women
  • Vertigo
  • Flu symptoms

Sprue-Like Enteropathy

One of the chief concerns with Benicar is the drug’s tendency to cause chronic diarrhea in patients and contribute to their malnutrition and dehydration levels. Benicar may cause sprue-like enteropathy in some patients which causes the chronic diarrhea, malnutrition and severe weight loss in patients.

The Lasting Effects of Benicar

Unfortunately, even when patients stop taking Benicar, there are some side effects that will leave patients with severe health complications. For instance, the lasting effects of Benicar, called villous atrophy, include:

  • Dehydration
  • Malnutrition
  • Low electrolyte counts
  • Compromised immune system

It is important to note that Benicar side effects, both mild and serious, can and develop years after the medicine has been prescribed. Studies have found that a patient taking Benicar is not going to necessarily react poorly to the drug. In fact, someone could use the drug for years before experiencing any complications.

This aspect of the drug has contributed to misdiagnoses of the symptoms. In fact, because Benicar’s sprue-like enteropathy resembles Celiac disease, it has often misled doctors and delayed critical treatment for ill patients.
