With more than 2 MILLION adult drivers and passengers being treated in hospitals and emergency rooms throughout the United States in 2009, many injuries that these victims suffered were located in the wrist and hand area.
Largely attributed to the force that the wrists often endure at the moment of impact (largely due to drivers gripping the wheel), wrist injuries are a common complaint of auto accident survivors in the U.S.
If you or someone you love has suffered a serious wrist injury due to the negligence of another motorist, the victim may be eligible to receive compensation for their injuries – including any costs associated with the recovery from those injuries.

Common Types Of Wrist Injuries
Connecting the forearm to the hand, the wrist has four main joints (or “articulations”) and 8 carpel bones – all of which are susceptible to damage in the event of an auto crash.
The main areas that injury victims can damage include:
- carpometacarpal joint
- mid carpel joint
- radiocarpal joint
The most frequently broken bone in the wrist is the “scaphoid”, which is located on the thumb side of the wrist – right where the wrist bends. As this area is often placed under the most amount of stress during an auto accident, it is often the first bone to break in this area.
Symptoms and Treatment of Wrist Injuries
A wrist injury or wrist bone fracture is often associated with searing pain and localized swelling at the base of the thumb. In some cases, the bone is known to bulge – or sometimes protrude – from the skin, causing great discomfort to the injury victim.
The treatment of a wrist injury often varies depending on the severity of the damage however, most treatments can include:
- re-setting the broken bone and applying a cast
- using pins, wires and / or plates to re-align a broken bone
- applying heat and ice to the affected area to control swelling
- topical creams / anti-inflammatory medication
- compression bandage (for a short period of time)
As with any injury, it is important to consult the opinion of a certified medical practitioner to ensure that adequate diagnosis and treatment is provided as quickly as possible.
