Listeria Hysteria: Blue Bell & Jeni’s Ice Cream Recalled

ice-creamAnother ice cream maker has pulled its products off shelves and halted sales because of a listeria risk.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams is recalling all its products from retailers and closing ice cream shops in six states over concerns about possible listeria contamination.

The recall covers all Jeni products including ice creams, frozen yogurts, sorbets, and ice cream sandwiches sold at boutique stores in seven states and at retailers such as Whole Foods and Target.

The ice cream shop said in a statement that it has “initiated a voluntary recall of all ice creams, frozen yogurts, sorbets, and ice cream sandwiches for all flavors and containers because of the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes.”

The company is not aware of anyone getting sick from the contamination, but the recall announcement comes in the wake of an expanded recall of Blue Bell Ice Cream products, which have been linked to three Listeria-related deaths and several illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the Blue Bell Listeria case dates back to 2010.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that causes listeriosis infection, a foodborne illness that causes symptoms of headache, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and stiffness.

Customers who have purchased any of the products are urged to dispose of them or return them to the store where they were purchased for an exchange or full refund, and consult with their physician regarding any medical questions.
