auto-accident-injuriesA tragic accident occured in Winston-Salem on Thursday March 12, which injured three individuals and fatally wounded one.

Joseph Lamont Abbitt, 54, and a resident of Winston-Salem, died in a head-on-collision that occurred near Bainbridge Drive and White Street.

The accident occurred at approximately 11 p.m. Three other individuals injured in the car crash were transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.

According to law enforcement officials, Abbitt was traveling north in the southbound lane in a 1999 Volvo when the car hit a 2010 Mercedes that was traveling south.

Officials report that the driver of the Mercedes attempted to avoid Abbott’s Volvo, but could not avoid the collision.

It is unclear what caused the accident. An autopsy has not been completed yet, so there is no indication of drugs or alcohol being involved in the accident.

Abbitt does have a history of driving while intoxicated. He was scheduled to appear in court in April to address an earlier DWI violation.

We send our deepest condolences to the Abbitt family.
