Freezing rain contributed to black ice that led to multiple accidents on Sunday morning.
Numerous accident were reported throughout Raleigh, North Carolina. Meteorologists reported that the light rain froze on the ground that was still cold.
This freezing rain was particularly dangerous on bridges and overpasses. One of the most serious accidents on Sunday morning occurred on I-540 near Aviation Parkway.
The accident involved about a dozen vehicles. North Carolina State Troopers responded to the accident. Reports indicate that the accident was caused by one driver hitting a patch of black ice on the interstate.
This caused multiple cars to become involved in the accident. Fortunately, no fatalities or serious injuries were reported in the multiple-car crash.
Throughout the weekend, troopers responded to more than 20 accidents throughout Durham County. The number of car accidents this winter is indication of the terrible weather conditions.
Many auto and body shops throughout the reason are fully booked because of all of the fender-benders that have occurred on NC highways and roads this winter.
States in the South, including North Carolina, are ill-equipped to deal with treacherous road conditions caused by snow, freezing rain and black ice.
In addition to the black ice that endangers motorists and the state’s roads, utility companies have been dealing with power outages caused by ice accumulating on power lines.
More than 24 hours after the winter storm that dumped snow in North Carolina, thousands of residents were still without power.
